Cyber Theft Impacts South Florida Residents with Credit Card Fraud

Credit card fraud can invade through camera captures of card information and even international hacking. According to the SunSentinel, cybercriminal Egor Shevelev, known online as ‘Eskalibur,’ has been convicted for theft of credit card numbers and sale of fraudulent cards, totaling more than 118,000.

Victims of Shevelev’s scam were primarily from Florida and New York. According to the article, prosecutors estimated more than $59 million in damages, but an actual number was incalculable. Card information is suspected to have transferred through Western Union wire services in a ring of information obtained and item purchases, including designer handbags and Apple products.

Prosecutors found illegal purchases were made in South Florida counties, including Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Martin. Three fraudulent card users in Florida were sentenced to pay $1 million in restitution in 2008. Shevelev will serve 14 years in prison before being deported to Ukraine.

Facing charges for credit card fraud may require the expertise of a federal defense attorney with knowledge in fraud cases. Individuals convicted of credit card fraud may depend on the number of uses of the card. The accused could receive a misdemeanor penalty if the purchase was under $100 or used less than three times over six months. If a fraudulent card is used more than three times, the accused may face a minimum five-year sentence and pay damages to the victim up to $5,000.
